Case Study
SternHost upgrades the University of Lagos to DSpace 7

Introduction

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a federal tertiary institution in Lagos, Nigeria, with a student population of over 57,000. UNILAG is one of the first-generation universities in Nigeria and is ranked among the top universities in Africa.

Challenges

UNILAG was facing a serious problem: its institutional repository was outdated and vulnerable, with no essential security measures in place. It also had indexing issues and was plagued by security and bug-related problems. This posed a major threat to the university's research assets and the accessibility of its academic work.

Solutions & Benefits

SternHost embarked on a comprehensive journey to revamp UNILAG's institutional repository. Our services included:

Upgrade and security vulnerabilities patches

We seamlessly performed a successful upgrade from DSpace 5 to DSpace 7, ensuring uninterrupted service while addressing security and bug-related issues.

Customization

Customization of the Angular DSpace frontend, and the configuration of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).

Data Migration

In addition, we seamlessly migrated over configurations, communities, collections and 10,000 items from DSpace 5 to DSpace 7.

The deployment of DSpace Digital repository software marked the dawn of a new era for UNILAG, ushering in a multitude of benefits. These include remarkable enhancements in the university's global ranking, securing the top position in Nigeria and placing it in the range of 401-500 out of over 1,799 institutions according to the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings released on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. It also brought about improved security, accessibility and visibility of the university's research.
